Since 2001, the Colorado River Authority, the public education affiliate of the Colorado River Board of California, has funded a series of interviews of leaders involved in managing the Colorado River for California.

The project resulted in a video and transcript for each interview, summarized and viewable below.

Jerry Muys: Attorney for California in the Historic Arizona v. California Case

Jerome (“Jerry”) C. Muys is a graduate of the Stanford Law School. Mr. Muys’ involvement in Colorado River matters began when he was hired in the summer of 1956, as a law clerk by Northcutt “Mike” Ely, lead counsel for the state of California to work on the landmark Arizona v. California case. After graduation from law school, Mr. Muys continued working for Mr. Ely for several years on the Arizona v. California litigation. Subsequently, Mr. Muys joined other law firms and went on to represent The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California on Colorado River matters generally, and worked on some aspects of the Hoover power contract renewal process as well as to represent Metropolitan with regard to the Indian boundary issues which had been left open by the United States Supreme Court’s 1964 Decree in Arizona v. California. At the time Mr. Muys’ oral history was recorded, he was still actively representing The Metropolitan Water District in the Arizona v. California litigation.
